SAHRC rejects FF Plus request to probe Zuma's land comments

Cape Town - The SA Human Rights Commission will not investigate the FF Plus's complaint that President Jacob Zuma is fuelling racial divisions by claiming land in South Africa was stolen, the party said on Thursday.
The party was told it was out of the commission’s jurisdiction and the complaint did not constitute a violation of human rights in terms of the Constitution, MP Pieter Groenewald said.
The party was furious. To imply that whites had stolen the land in South Africa "infringes every white person’s inherent dignity and is nothing other than racism", he said.
"Land requires hard work and expertise to be made productive. The mere possession of land will not suddenly eradicate poverty, inequality and unemployment.
"White people were being blamed for poverty because Zuma and the ANC did not know what to do about it," he said.
The party intended appealing the decision.
The SAHRC could not be immediately reached for comment.
Zuma made the comments at the ANC's birthday celebration rally in Rustenburg on January 9.
"One of the most fundamental historic injustices is the systematic dispossession of our people’s land,” Zuma said in his speech.
"The challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment have their roots in the vast tracks of land that were stolen from the indigenous people of South Africa."
