100 people who will determine Zuma’s fate this weekend

The ANC is set to hold its National Executive Committee meeting this weekend which, among other things, will discuss the relationship between president Jacob Zuma and the controversial Gupta family.

Revelations this week from government officials have put the president in the awkward position of having to explain his relationship with the Guptas to the ANC executive members.

Several current and former government officials, including deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas, have alleged that they met with the Gupta family and had been offered high-up positions in government, with conditions.

Allegations from former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor also stated that Zuma was present in another room when one of these meetings took place.

In a Q&A session in Parliament on Thursday, Zuma vehemently denied any ties to the claims, saying that only he had the power to appoint ministers, and that the questions should be directed at the Guptas and the politicians involved.

For the Gupta family’s part, they denied any meetings took place, and called on the politicians who claim they did, to provide evidence in court.

The scandal has caused enough of a ruckus that the ANC executive has been forced to take action – even if that action is to only discuss and investigate the allegations. There have been calls from opposition parties for Zuma to step down or be recalled by the ANC.

According to ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa, the matter of recalling Zuma cannot be preempted – as the allegations are serious, the party has to investigate, he said.

The Gupta matter is on the NEC agenda to be discussed, however.

Meanwhile, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has said that he has not received any formal motion from ANC members for Zuma to be recalled.

Reports from Gupta-controlled newspaper, The New Age, cite “reliable sources” as saying that the ANC NEC meet will be stage to a play from an “anti-Zuma faction” in the ANC to remove Zuma and take power.

The paper said the anti-Zuma faction would “test its power” by first going after Jessie Duarte, who is seen as the president’s closest ally.

News24, however, has received information from party insiders that the ANC will rally behind Zuma and he will come out of the meeting stronger than ever.

These are the 100 people who ultimately hold Zuma’s future in their hands, as elected at the 53rd National Conference in Mangaung December 2012.
